Kana Mutombo


Kana has over 18 years of extensive experience in transport infrastructure
development in both, the public and private sectors. He is currently employed by a
leading Railway and Port parastatal company as a Principal Engineer, involving in the
establishment of a Research & Development unit in the organization. Prior to that,
Kana held the position of Port Engineer. In this position, he was overall responsible
for the management of a major port infrastructure expansion programme of
approximately USD 300 million in the port of Port Elizabeth and Port of East London
in South Africa. During his PhD studies, Kana was contracted from time to time as
European Union Port Expert with the International Maritime Safety, Security and
Environment Academy (IMSSEA) to develop and provide port management training
courses in West Africa as part of a capacity building project (IPSEA) sponsored by the
European Union. Kana holds a Bachelor degree in civil engineering from the University
of Johannesburg (South Africa), a Master in Business Administration (MBA) from the
University of South Africa and a PhD in Port Environmental Management specializing
in climate change from the World Maritime University in Sweden. He is accredited as
a European Professional Engineer by the European Federation of National Engineering
Association and he is also registered as a Professional Construction Manager with the
South African Council of Project and Construction Management Profession. Kana is
