The pre-feasibility study aims at investigating the possibility of developing a national railway networks linking all DRC major concentrations zones with a final link to the Port of Banana where a future deep water port is under planning.
There are currently 5 major zones of population’s concentration in DRC: Kinshasa in the west, Kananga/Mbuji-Mayi in the centre, Lubumbashi in the Southeast, Goma/Bukavu in the east and Kisangani in the Northeast. Unfortunately due to ageing infrastructure, mobility between these concentrations zones is gradually becoming unpractical. Despite its poor safety record, air borne transport has become the only reliable means of transport within DRC but this form of transport is unfortunately not accessible to the majority of the population who lives in poverty. Ironically, many of these concentrations zones of DRC are better connected with neighboring countries’ infrastructure corridors than they are with domestic ones. As a result, import and export requirements for the DRC have largely benefited neighboring countries, simply due to the substantial multiplier benefits generated by such logistics activities. A need for a national reliable network linking all major concentrations zones is therefore paramount.
